'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Director Rian Johnson Discusses Film's Tone
There have been a lot of rumors concerning the tone of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Some were expecting something darker, like how Empire Strikes Back was darker compared to A New Hope, and some were expecting something similar to the tone of The Force Awakens. It turns out that the former camp was at least a little bit right, at least according to director Rian Johnson.
Empire Magazine has a cover story on the upcoming sequel and Screen Rant got a hold of a copy where Johnson addresses the tone of the movie:
"This is the second movie in the trilogy, so it's easy to draw parallels to Empire in terms of a darker feel. And we do dig into the characters: we're going to challenge them and things are gonna get tough for everybody. But I didn't want this to go too dark. One of the things I drew from J.J.'s film was that sense of fun and playfulness – that as much Star Wars as 'I am your father.'"
So we'll have a little bit of darkness, and we'll have a bunch of porgs running around. It doesn't need to be either or, and it sounds like Johnson is doing his best to make sure the movie is balanced for whatever someone wants to get out of the experience. That's probably the best way to approach the series — there is no pleasing everyone, but balance is important.
Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
