Ruby Rose Has Been Cast as Batwoman in the New CW Series

Now this is some casting done right. Deadline is reporting that Ruby Rose has been cast as Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, for The CW's upcoming show. The series has been the talk of the town since it was announced, and we got some new information on it during the TCAs over the weekend.

The character of Batwoman has been around since 1956 but was re-imagined as a Jewish lesbian, making her one of the few "out" superheroes out there. This will be the first time a LGBTQ+ character will be the lead of their own show. The character will be introduced during the crossover this year while the series is still in the script phase.

In the CW's Batwoman, written by Caroline Dries based on the DC characters, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence. But don't call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope.

Rose, who identifies as gender fluid and a lesbian, has been a rising star since her breakout role on Orange Is the New Black. We've seen her movies like John Wick: Chapter 2, Pitch Perfect 3, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, and she plays a significant role in The Meg coming out this week. This is a big get as far as casting goes, and the fact that DC, The CW, and Warner Bros. cast not only a lesbian but someone who identifies as gender fluid is a big deal.
