PlayStation 4 Owners Reporting a Brick-Causing Message This Weekend
A word of warning is being sent out to PlayStation 4 owners this evening after several players have reported their consoles being bricked by a message. The original report of this happened late last night and carried into the morning, as a Reddit user named Huntstark reported their system freezing up after receiving a private message.
There is a new glitch that basically bricks your console and forces you to factory reset it. Even deleting the message from the mobile app doesn't work. It happened to me during Rainbow Six: Siege. A player from the other team used a dummy account to send the message and crashed my entire team. We all have had to factory reset. Only one of our guys wasn't affected and he has his messages private.
Throughout the day, players have pieced together that the messages are coming from salty and angry players using the message as a sort of revenge for losing multiplayer matches, most of them coming from Rainbow Six Siege. There seem to be two fixes to this. The first step is to read the message on the PlayStation 4 mobile app and delete it there so your console doesn't even come in contact with the message itself. The second step is to go to Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings, and change your Message settings to private so that only users you know can message you.
Sony has yet to comment on the matter or offer any kind of solution to fix it, so please, look out for your console and take the necessary steps before going back online.
