'Candyman' Reimagining Finds its Candyman in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
Jordan Peele has found his Candyman. Next years "spiritual sequel" from the Get Out producer has found its star in Yahya Abdoul-Mateen II, who played Aquaman villain Black Manta in last years mega-hit. Nia DaCosta will direct. No word yet on if original Candyman star Tony Todd will make an appearance, although it feels like he will. Call it a hunch.
Mateen is about to blow up, as he is also set to star in Peele's next film Us hitting theaters in March, and also will play a role in HBO's Watchmen series. The new Candyman will return to the same neighborhood in Chicago as that first film from 1992, although that neighborhood has gone through some changes since then. Here is hoping that they stick to the romantic horror themes that permeated that first film as well, the operatic nature of that film is what made it that much more special. If there is someone in horror right now that can pull this off, it would be Peele. Between Us, the relaunch of Twilight Zone, and now this, his goal of telling important stories through the lense of the horror genre is being reached and then some. This film goes in front of cameras next spring.
The new Candyman will hit theaters on June 12, 2020.
