Captain Marvel is on Track to Make $155M-$160M Opening Weekend
It looks Marvel Studios has another hit on their hands. The Hollywood Reporter has released the current box office projections and Captain Marvel is currently tracking to make a $155-$160 million domestically. This comes from extremely solid Thursday previews with $20.7 million and a Friday that is projected to make another $60 million.
Even at $150 million, the first female-fronted superhero pic from Marvel Studios and Disney would land the second-best opening of all time for a comic book adaptation starring a new character behind Black Panther ($200 million), as well as the seventh biggest for any title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind the three Avengers movies: Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3.
It isn't just domestically that the movie is doing well. In China, it opened to $34 million which is the second highest opening of any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie beside Avengers: Infinity War. Brazil, in particular, seems very taken with Captain Marvel as it opened to a $3 million box office which is the second highest of all time with only Avengers: Infinity War leading the charge. Captain Marvel opened in a couple of other markets that are projected to bring in $44 million.
Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.
Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
