[Rumor] 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3' Eyeing 2021 Production Start
We're still terribly excited by the news that James Gunn will in fact return to Disney's Marvel Studios to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Perhaps you'll recall the messy business of the House of Mouse firing the filmmaker following old tweets resurfacing (due in large part to a very vocal person on Twitter taking umbrage with Gunn's many MANY criticism of the sitting American President), which were not so great in retrospect. Gunn apologized profusely for the tweets, citing that the'd grown as a joke crafter and person, and sort of disappeared from the public eye following his termination from the MCU.
Rumors abounded that Disney was NOT going to use Gunn's existing script for the 3rd Guardians, but the cast banned together and released a signed letter in support of their director and friend.
This this year alone, we've had star Chris Pratt assuring fans the film was still going to happen despite all evidence that Marvel Studios was shelving the film to work on The Eternals, Shang-Chi, and the Black Widow solo film.
Kevin Feige said as recently as last month that Gunn's script WAS going to be used, but no further information was released at the time.
Cut to last week's surprise announcement that Marvel Studios was reinstating Gunn to GotG Vol 3, and what the news would mean for Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad film over at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Production Weekly says that GotG Vol 3 (still using the "Hot Christmas" working title, btw) is looking at a possible production start of February 2021. It's likely that year choice has to do with the existing Marvel Studios slate, and Gunn's contractual obligations for The Suicide Squad.
We'll wait for you, James. We'll wait.
