Budweiser Applies For A New Trademark Related To Esports
If things go their way, it looks like you may be seeing Budweiser and Bud Light appear more frequently at esports tournaments and broadcasts in the future. A story this weekend from DotEsports reports that Anheuser-Busch has applied for trademarks on three specific phrases with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Those three quotes would be "the official beer of esports," "the official beer of gaming," and "the official beer of gamers." If those phrases sound familiar, they should, as they're repurposed copies of the ones they use for sponsored broadcast and commercials for practically every sport you've ever watched on television. From the NFL and NBA all the way down to your local minor league baseball team shown. So it's pretty clear the company is looking to make their brands featured and synonymous with gaming very soon beyond just having a logo in the background of Tapper.
The move should come as no surprise considering how often you see Budweiser on other events, we're just surprised it took them this long to actually do it. It's not like the demographic or age of viewers was holding them back as some kids watch football just as much as other kids play Fortnite. But one does wonder if the company held back to see if esports would ever reach a certain level of marketability before they chose to put money into being a part of it. Keep in mind, this is still early in the process of whatever they're doing as the trademarks need approval. But don't think for an instant the minute they're able to, the company won't swoop in and try to land as many deals as they can on tournaments in need of funding.
