The Comic Shop of Oswego, New York, to Close

The owners of The Comic Shop in Oswego, New York, have announced that they will begin closing the store over the next few months. Their clearance sale will begin in February and they will still have new comics every Wednesday until the end of March. Co-owner Arlene Spizman posted the following editorial to Facebook.

The Comic Shop of Oswego, New York, to Close

In late fall of 1992, DC Comics made the decision to "kill" one of their long-standing characters, Superman, and I decided to open The Comic Shop in Oswego. As with most comic book deaths, Superman was resurrected, but with the heightened awareness in pop culture, along with my acquiring a huge collection of over 10,000 comics through my antiques business, I was motivated to go from antiques dealer to comic shop owner. However, after serving our community for over twenty-seven years, I'm now making the decision to retire and to close my business.

Many of you who know me are aware that I have 4-year- old granddaughter who lives on the west coast. In June I will be a grammy again. I need to be able to spend time with these little ones so I can teach them about how responsible Wonder Woman is, how cooperative Superman is, and what a good citizen Batman is. (yes, there are young reader books on these topics!) I have made many friends while operating The Comic Shop. Countless young people who frequented the store have become adults and now bring their own children to the store. I can't begin to mention the joy I've had in watching our comic shop community grow and prosper, how so many of you have chosen your paths in life while maintaining your love of comics. The industry itself is still strong, proven by the many characters and stories that have branched out to so many other media forms.

The Comic Shop will remain open for several more months. We will continue to get new comics on Wednesdays through March 25th. Those of you who are familiar with comic publishers know that there will still be titles trickling in after that; the industry isn't known for its adherence to due dates. Meanwhile, I have loads of items to sell, so on Feb 1, I will begin marking existing inventory down, running special sales, bringing in my own stashed items, and hoping you will all take advantage of the sale prices to add to your own collections. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all, getting to know you, sharing thoughts, opinions and family stories through the years. I appreciate your loyalty to shopping locally and supporting The Comic Shop in every way that you have. I've been so fortunate in having Martin Kinney as my manager for almost 25 years, and Brian "Da Sunday Guy* for almost that long. And for all of you who supported our local comic shop: I wish you all well as I begin a new chapter of my life!

Bleeding Cool tries to mark the passing of comic stores as well as new arrivals on the scene. We're more likely to hear about the former rather than the latter due to concerned fans, but do please feel free to let us know the changes in your own local marketplace.
