A Thrilling Bloody First Issue: The Goddamned #1 Review

unnamed4

This week sees the release of Goddamned. From Image Comics, written by bestselling writer Jason Aaron, with art by R.M. Guéra, Goddamned #1 is the beginning of an all-new series of Biblical proportions.

This is how the series is described:

The story takes place 1,655 years after Eden, and life on Earth has already gone to hell. The world of man is a place of wanton cruelty and wickedness. Prehistoric monsters and stone-age marauders roam the land. Murder and destruction are the rule of the day. Humankind is a failed experiment. This is life before the Flood. The story of man on the verge of his first apocalypse. Welcome to the world of the Goddamned.

My initial reaction after reading the first issue is…holy blood and mud Batman! The main character, who is nameless at the beginning of the issue, wakes up in a pond. A young boy is yelling at him amazed at how he's alive. Then, said main character seeks vengeance on the "Bone Boys," who threw him into the pond. What happens next is a lovely, bloody mess. R.M. Guera's art sucked me right in. I could almost hear the slashing of bodies as I read. From there Jason Aaron's script takes us through an intense inner dialogue where we slowly start to piece together exactly who this indestructible man is and how he came to be. Maybe some of you have already guessed who by descriptions of the comic, etc…but for those who haven't, use it as motivation to get to the comic book store and pick up this badass first issue.

I'm going to predict that this is Image Comic's next really big series. There's something especially epic about it. All in all, Goddamned #1 has hooked this comic book reader, and I can't wait to see how the story continues.
