Afua Richardson – An Oncoming Storm?

So, yesterday, I wrote a story about a rumoured upcoming Storm monthly comic from Marvel, without any word of creators. Lots of people got excited.

One of my favourite writers about comics, David Brothers, tweeted;

It's a possibility, certainly. One of the notable aspects of the recent news about Ms Marvel as a female Muslim teenager, was that it was being written by a Muslim woman. Who, at one point in her life, was a teenager. There's a mix of semi-relevant life experience and an emotional believable connection with the audience when certain details of the author or artist are known, it's unavoidable. I tweeted a response, and Comic Beat's Heidi MacDonald also replied;

David Brothers asked;

But to no reply.

Afua Richardson is an accomplished designer and illustrator who has been mostly seen in comics through her colour work. However, of late she's been more prominently seizing the full artistic reigns. Genius was a pilot for Top Cow that she drew a few years ago, which will soon be continuing as an ongoing series.

But her style has grown from those hard spot blacks to a more feathered organic style, giving it complexity and movement, closer to that of Sean Gordon Murphy or Kyle Bakercombined with a sense of colour and brush which reminded me of David Mack.

A strip for DC Comics here, a fine line in convention sketches there, Richardson is certainly up there for such a prominent gig.

But does Heidi know something she can tell? Or was she just making the observation that there are such well qualified creators out there and hungry for it? Either way, it's a good excuse to showcase some of Richardson's work and link to her twitter feed and Tumblr
