Are Boogers Enough To Make A Character Effective?

I was drawn to Image Comics new leading lady from the moment I saw her bright green hair on the cover of Image+, but right after I learned the title being Snotgirl, I tilted my head to the side. I'm a huge fan of writer Bryan Lee O'Malley so that immediately put my head back in place when I discovered that he would be working on the new comic. From what I saw, I enjoyed Leslie Hung's art style too. However, as time has gone on, and I see that the release date it nearing, I can't help but wonder how effective this whole booger thing will be…

The main character's name is Lottie Person, and here's the description:

"Lottie's a gorgeous, fun-loving social media star with a seemingly perfect life—but deep-down is she really just a gross, allergy-ridden mess? Enter a world of snot, blood, and tears in this new ongoing series."

In talking about the book, Bryan Lee O'Malley described Lottie by saying…

"By all appearances she's flawless, but she's an introverted weirdo on the inside."

When you look at the preview pages below, you'll see that the comic is highly reliant on social media, texting, and really immerses you in the world of a blogger. What I like about it is, it's so realistic to what social media does to all of us. You can look at a picture of a girl smiling with her boyfriend, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's what is happening behind the scenes. It's all about keeping up appearances. Perhaps the overly realistic boogers coming out of Lottie's nose will be just what readers need to think twice about how they go about their daily lives, and who they choose to admire. I'm hopeful for the book, and can't wait to read a full issue.
