Brian Michael Bendis Blinded by MRSA Infection for Days, Now Recovering After "Worst Week of My Life"
Famed Avengers and Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Michael Bendis just dropped some dramatic news on Twitter: he's recovering from a serious MRSA infection which put him in intensive care for days and temporarily blinded him. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics. Orbital infections caused by MRSA are "a rising menace in the ocular field" according to the National Institute of Health. Orbital cellulitis which can result from MSRA can be potentially sight and life threatening.
The legendary Marvel writer who recently announced his new contract with DC, is now in recovery from the surprise infection. As you can see from the tweet, the comics industry almost lost one of its most prolific and prominent writers in the last few days.
He gave gratitude to his wife and friends as well as Marvel and DC for being so accommodating in this trying time.
He also gave a shout-out to the fans for being so vocally supportive of his recent work on Jessica Jones and Spider-Man. He also received some support from fellow comics powerhouse, Gail Simone. There were also kind words from talent like Charles Soule, Greg Pak, and Christos Gage.
He announced that he will not be able to make his Portugal appearance and gave much love to the hospital that took care of him.
I'm just glad to hear we didn't lose an industry giant last week when it sounds like we easily could have. The industry is definitely a better and more colorful place with Brian Michael Bendis around. Though obviously a serious matter, as with many health issues fast action makes the difference in treatment and recovery.
If there is further news on the subject, we'll have it for you here on Bleeding Cool in the coming days.
