Brian Wood Writes To Retailers About Briggs Land – His New Comic And AMC TV Series

Brian Wood has written a new comic book, Briggs Land, for Dark Horse, with Mack Chater, Lee Loughridge, Nate Peikos and Tula Lotay. It's out in August and is being published in association with AMC who are developing it as a TV series too. But you get a first look in August.

Hell, you get a first look, below.

Wood writes,

So as a writer of serialized stories, you come up with an idea and you game it out and come to the conclusion, yeah, this is a nice little six issue mini, or, this would probably work best as a one-off OGN.  But sometimes it's an idea that just gets larger and larger the more you explore it and at some point it starts to freak you out because you can't stop it. I've had a couple of those in my career… DMZ ran 72 issues, but it could have done another 72 easy.  The Massive, I ended that at 30 issues, but left a hell of a lot of material on the cutting room floor.  Northlanders was a concept that could also have gone on indefinitely. These are books you all sell a lot of in trade.

BRIGGS LAND is also one of these types of books. And I'm taking the safeties off.  If it runs 30 issues, or 50, or 72, that's great, because I have the material for it.  The story is centered around Grace Briggs, who just took control of the family business, the largest and most secretive antigovernment secessionist community in the United States.  For over a hundred years the Briggs clan held this land, and now, with the ATF sending agents around, a fracking company applying political pressure, and a hell of a lot of family in-fighting, suddenly it's all at risk of falling apart.

BRIGGS LAND is an organized crime drama with a huge dose of current events thrown in.  Think of it as a rural DMZ.  The Sopranos set in the militia community.  Ruby Ridge writ large.  It's smart, relevant, and monthly, starting August 17.

As a kicker, I signed a deal with AMC to develop it as a television show, and am right now writing the pilot.  I see this as not only my next big comic book epic, but the biggest project of my career.  I hope it does well for you, and thanks for all your help.

Briggs Land, nearly a hundred square miles of rural wilderness, contains the largest antigovernment secessionist movement in the United States. When matriarch Grace Briggs wrests control of the operation from her incarcerated husband, she sparks a war within the community—and her immediate family—that threatens to bring the full power of the federal government down on their heads.
