Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golem #3 by Dave Wachter
Clayface wishes he was this cool looking! The glorious coloring and texture of the golem front and center really allows the audience to observe every rock, root, and detail as it plays off the black and white background. Just look at the size comparison with the little kid; from this specific moment in time, either the golem could be a gentle giant, or is about to get violent. It's obviously a very powerful being with its presence alone. Either way, it's eerie and beautiful and definitely catches the eye in a good way.
I hate it when I get a nasty brain freeze when I'm slurping my ICEE too fast! I can't help myself; it's just so damn delicious! Anyway, I really like the psychic projections attacking the team, and their extremely radicalized style. I believe the projections are actually the latest Katy Perry song, as they attack the brain as relentless ear worms. The contrast of the characters and the projections is what I enjoy the most, for it really highlights Anka's chops as a well-rounded artist. Quick X-Force! Suck your tongues to the roof of your mouths!
One of my favorite things about these Fearless Defenders covers is that Mark Brooks is obviously having a blast making them. They haven't felt dull or uninspired, for every month Brooks has brought a different twist and constantly keeps things fresh. Take this cover for instance; fans of both sketches and final product can appreciate this cover together as it focuses on the many designs of Valkyrie. Something about blue pencil always gives me a little thrill. I don't know why, but when it's applied skillfully, it really makes the sketches look amazing.
Every Lost Vegas variant cover has been a joy to look at, but Skottie Young always manages to bump things to the next level with his beautifully eccentric designs. With a sci-fi story such as Lost Vegas, there's no harm whatsoever when bringing the madness. Take this high class lady for instance; her hair is curled, twisted, and resembles wires almost, while she looks forth though her extravagant mask and sips her fruity cosmic drink of sorts. Her pet looks just as deranged, with the haunting eye and jagged antler. The cherry on top? The wallpaper design, for it really brings the cover together. Young's style may be wild, be he gleefully plays on the border of conventional/unconventional.
This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. Sean Phillips once again—*whisper whisper* What's that? It's not Phillips? But it looks like—*whisper whisper* Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! Nicola Scott, bravo for producing such an amazing looking cover! The tones and textures, not to mention coloring, threw me for a loop, for I'm so used to seeing that similar look in all of Phillips' Fatale covers, but it looks stunning when applied to Red Sonja as well. Sonja looks ferocious as she goes in for the kill, sticking the audience with the pointy end. She is truly a warrior woman in this pose, and not to be messed with. It's nice to see her as a force to be reckoned with, and not like some tart appearing on every Zenescope cover in a skimpy outfit.
