God's Judgement On Alan Scott Being Gay in Green Lantern (Spoilers)

The new Alan Scott: Green Lantern has been looking at the life of a superhero, when he's a gay man in America in the 1940s.

The new Alan Scott: Green Lantern series as part of the Golden Age line from DC Comics that was meant to be showrun by Geoff Johns, though he's going Ghost Machine-exclusive, has been looking at the life of a superhero, when he's a gay man in the nineteen forties. It was a change that began to be introduced with the New 52 and Earth-2 over ten years ago, but is now being properly explored. What sets it apart from other superhero series with queer leads is that it is set in the nineteen forties. A time when his very nature is considered not just immoral but downright criminal. And opposed to the church's then-view of the word of God. And Alan Scott knows it. But in Alan Scott: Green Lantern #3 out on Tuesday, he is not alone in that. Spoilers ahead, of course.

But it just so happens that we have the Spectre on hand. Who is, in the DC Universe, the closest you can get to the word of God. Debuting in More Fun Comics #52 in 1940, when a murdered cop Jim Corrigan, is refused entrance into the afterlife, then sent back to Earth by "the Voice" to eliminate evil. Later, he was defined as the embodiment of the Wrath of God, a fallen angel named Aztar who had repented and was serving penance, or the Metatron himself.

Nevertheless, his perspective may be a wider one that humanity may have at any given stage. And he shares that perspective with Alan Scott.

"Judge not, that ye be not judged" if I was going by my old King James version. And Spectre is all about judging. And makes his perspective.

In this respect, as least, Alan Scott has nothing to worry about. And that, at least from the DCU, is coming from the ultimate authority. Alan Scott: The Green Lantern #3 by Tim Sheridan and Cian Tormey is published by DC Comics this Tuesday.
