Jesse James Does Amazing Arizona Comic Con
Jesse James of Jesse James Comics in Phoenix, Arizona writes,
Amazing Arizona Comic Con 2015 had a fantastic line-up. In fact for a single show probably one of the best in a long time. However, there might have been too many A+ guest as this show. For some reason they decided to put most of these guest in the middle aisles and run their lines North and South instead of the traditional East and West. This pretty much blocked most of the front line of artist alley and kept a lot of back row Artist alley creators with much smaller traffic flows.
Most fans were happy. However, most spent their times in lines in some cases more than a hour. When asked about the show most didn't get a chance to really look around or knew who else was there. With only one Publisher (Aspen)and very few retailers the con was really spread out with no themes or genres established in any areas. After talking to almost all the creators and vendors it was a rough overall con for them financially.
All that said I had a Great con. In fact, in my 33 years of going to cons, this was in my top 5 of all time. As a retailer, we had one of our best cons ever. This year we just sold Harley Quinn and well Harley Quinn ( well, Spawn and Star Wars). As a fan I got to meet Kevin Eastman, Charles Soule and Chad Hardin for the first time. In fact Chad Hardin and I went to the same High school, lived in the same neighborhood and shopped at the same comic book store in the 80's and 90's.
I have a simply rule at cons I set up at. I don't care what's going on at the con. I'm there to create my own con within the con. The other rule is you just have to have fun, shake hands, kiss a lot of babies and do as many selfies as possible. This con had all that for my team and more.
With main programming on the main floor for the main guest it was were all the love was shown. The other two programming rooms didn't get much attention and some of the panels just never happened or were not very organized.
Overall next year is a test for Jimmy Jay. He will have to get more publishers and retailers to attend and work on more volunteers for line control and other matters that arise. Artist alley needs to get more attention and vendors need to be a little more genre organized. Most people will come back and reset up for next year. However, knowing Jimmy he will bring in even a bigger group of A+ to take care of the most important people at a con the Fans.
This years Special Guest list: Todd Mcfarlane. Greg Capullo. Rob Liefeld. Kevin Eastman. George Perez. Steve Mcniven. Steve Epting. Adam Kubert. Mark Bagley. Herb Trimpe. Chad Hardin and many more
