The Weekly Static s01e20.2 – 2017 Most Valuable Player: TruTV
Welcome back to The Weekly Static's three-part mid-season finale! As we continue on with our little "mid-season finale," make sure to check out the "post-mortem" we performed on our biggest overall disappointment of 2017 (Spike's The Mist…though we're still looking at you, Twin Peaks); and tomorrow, we'll be making the case for 2018's "Cusack" show to keep both eyes out for (Hulu's Castle Rock). Today, we're taking a look at a little basic cable network that's been quietly churning out a quality lineup of some very cool and original programming. Our "little engine that could? Our most valuable player for 2017? TruTV.
Originally launched in 1991 as Court TV, the home for crime/criminal justice system-themed programming as well as live coverage of court cases from around the country, the network shifted the focus to "reality" and "in the moment" programming and relaunched itself as TruTV in 2008. TruTV shifted in focus six years later, with the network retooling its brand to focus on scripted and reality-based comedy series and specials.
With shows like At Home with Amy Sedaris, Hack My Life, I'm Sorry, Talk Show The Game Show and The Chris Gethard Show, TruTV has positioned itself to be more than just "The Home of Non-Stop Impractical Jokers Marathons." Here's why we think TruTV is deserving of a little love for their 2017, and why we're excited for what the network has in store for 2018:
