Where Will Batgirl Be Beyond Burnside?
Bleeding Cool reported Batgirl leaving Burnside on a road trip to find herself last month. Headed for Japan, Mark Doyle explained that Barbara will continue…
"that vibe of a young, twenty-something superhero, carving out her own little corner in the coolest, scariest city in the world."
My hope is that by the "twenty-something vibe" they don't mean throwing up into garbage cans after being too hungover, or taking selfies in the mirror. These were all things we had to suffer through during the less entertaining issues of Batgirl of Burnside. That chapter is coming to an end, and I hope it comes to an end for good. I was happy to see a lot of character development with Barbara over the last ten issues or so…however, I want the real Barbara Gordon back. I'm not too interested in seeing more "Babs."
The official description of the Batgirl #1 issue appeared in PreviewsWorld with an official title Beyond Burnside: Chapter One. It continued…
"In order to up her game, Babs travels to Japan on a quest to train with the most elite modern combat masters of the East. But when a chance meeting with an old friend puts a target on her back, Batgirl may need to use her new skills to solve a deadly mystery."
What that is, is a description with a lot of potential. I'm crossing all of my fingers and my toes that Hope Larson breathes a refreshing new life into the book, and turns back to a more sophisticated Barbara Gordon. Just because she's twenty-something, doesn't mean she has to use hashtags in her dialogue. Let's give the hipster generation something to aspire to, not add more fuel to their fire.
Batgirl #1 will hit comic book stores on July 27th.
