REVIEW: Star Wars #1 — "The Stakes Aren't That High"

(Marvel Comics, creative team: Charles Soule, Jesus Saiz, Arif Prianto, Clayton Cowles)

This issue fills in the moments after the Millennium Falcon made its escape from Cloud City, a sentence that many long-time fans will immediately understand. The stakes aren't that high — you know where Lando, Leia, Chewie and Luke will end up — but there's a tie-in to the sequel trilogy that completists will find interesting while updating Wookieepedia. There's a skilled Imperial operative who has all the relentless charm of Rebels season one Agent Kallus and less of his likely surprise. This issue posits a few character moments that fill in gaps fans likely already knew and has a pretty smart space battle. What this issue doesn't do is "anything new," and aside from thematically playing with themes from the end of the brilliant The Last Jedi, it won't offer any significant insights that you don't already have if you're pretty deep in the high grass. If this is your first exposure to Star Wars, they may as well be speaking Huttese for all you know. Nothing is bad here, but nothing leaps out as being good. RATING: MEH.

After so many losses is victory still possible? But, what Leia, Luke and their ragtag band of freedom fighters do not realize is that they have only traded one Imperial trap for another!
