REVIEW: Suicide Squad #1 — "That Tension And Unpredictability Is An Asset"

This issue is just a smidge too quick for its own good as it introduces some very interesting new characters and sends "about the worst Suicide Squad ever assembled" after them. Let's look at the good first: the issue has a few twists at its ending that are not easy to predict. The art is absolutely gorgeous, with crisp lines and vibrant colors from Redondo and Lucas. Tom Taylor's script gives you a George R.R. Martin feel where you don't want to get too attached to anyone (but seriously, where did some of these people come from? Didn't Zebra-Man used to work for Kobra?). That tension and unpredictability is an asset. What's not working alas is the huge cast and the scant ability to get to know them: the new teleporter Wink and the aerialist The Aerie had some "there" there, but it got short sheeted for more action scenes (which is not a bad choice, but one that makes it harder to connect with the characters). Would that we could get a better understanding of the Flavor Flav-meets-Paynekiller stylings of Deadly Six! This issue was very close to the mark, but likely needed an extra sized first issue to connect all the dots. RATING: HONORABLE MENTION.
