SDCC '15: Things Change with Uncanny Inhumans
By Octavio Karbank
I just attended Marvel's Uncanny Inhumans panel. While significant spoilers weren't dropped, we did become privy to some intriguing info. There are a ton of new X-Men and Inhuman-themed books coming out in Fall: All New X-Men, Extraordinary X-Men, Old Man Logan, All New Wolverine, Uncanny X-Men, Deadpool, and Karnak.
The creators present, Charles Soule, Humberto Ramos, Cullen Bunn, Jeff Lemire, and Axel Alonso, discussed what people should expect with the upcoming books.
All New X-Men will feature the "Kirby leading X-Men" in their efforts to make peace with an unfriendly world, while Extraordinary X-Men should offer a whole new landscape. According to Lemire, "…the world has changed and moved on, and it's a more dangerous place for mutants…" Storm has taken it upon herself to continue Xavier's dream and this is the team she's assembled. Additionally, "lots of interesting things are going to happen between Old Man Logan and Jean Grey."
With Old Man Logan, Logan will have to confront the X-Men, after having slaughtered them in his own timeline. We will, "get to see the Marvel universe through the eyes of the is out of time man, who has to carve his way through this new world…forced to confront the X-Men," said Lemire.
Not to dismiss X-23 as the new Wolverine, Axel Alonso praised the book, expressing that "what not fun about a female wolverine" with a chip on her shoulder, trying to fill the place of Wolverine?
Cullen Bunn, the writer of Uncanny X-Men, gave us a synopsis of his book, saying, that it's "a dangerous time for mutants, and I wanted to put together a team that was just as dangerous as the threats they are facing…they are upholding Xavier's dream even if they don't have any business doing so." Seeing what this team of cutthroats is willing to do to get the job done, will prove interesting.
Unfortunately, we didn't get much info on the upcoming Deadpool or Karnak series, except the overused, "you'll see him like never before."
And finally, The Uncanny Inhumans. Charles Soule expressed a great deal in relation to this new book, saying it's a story about the Inhumans, and how "they have two sides." There's the group we know, the popular and regal Inhumans like Medusa, Black Bolt, etc, "but recently there's been an explosion of new super powered Inhumans…(there's) the people working at subway," and then the royalty. He also disccuess when Black Bolt shipped his son off with Kang, and while Medusa had no knowledge of the event, she soon will and the two will be forced to figure out how to get their son from him.
When questions rolled around, a fan brought up both Ms. Marvel and Johnny Storm, asking what their role will be. Soule went on to say that, "Ms. Marvel is fantastic" and will continue in her solo book, but, "I'm going to use her where it makes sense in Uncanny Inhumans and so on. She's a very important character. We'll see what happens." With regards to Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, he talked about how Medusa and Johnny are now, "palling around…in every sense of the word." Of course since Johnny once dated Inhuman Crystal, Medusa's sister, there's going to be drama once it all comes to light. Crystal will find out about the relationship and she won't be pleased.
There was skepticism about whether the Human Torch would be staying around and why Medusa would choose to be with such a hothead. Soule responded by assuring folks that Johnny is very much a part of the book and not temporary. The dynamic between Johnny and the Inhumans, Medusa in particular, …while he yaps a lot, "if you're Medusa and you've been with a silent king, then maybe being with a guy with things to say might be interesting to you."
All in all, it was a pretty informative panel, as much as these panels can be. Now we just have to wait until the books get released during the Fall.
