Ten Thoughts About Ten Comics Published Today – Glory, BPRD, Road Rage, Avengers, New Avengers, Batman, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Peter Panzerfaust And Uncanny X-Men
Here are ten thoughts about ten comics published today. There may be some spoilers but I'll attempt to avoid the big ones.
Glory was Rob Liefeld's Wonder Woman. And while DC's current take has gone to the mythological roots of the character, here we get something alien cloaked in conspiracy, bringing a fistful of horror with it. A forgotten superhero, but one whose impact echoes from the past to the present, and whose appearance on the page matches that, a truly strong woman with the build to match now… lost. And with a look that places this very much in the Prophet ballpark.
Batman not only gives us some really freaky half illusion/half real members of the council of Owls, but also one of those broken body Batman scenes that accompany an ultimate fall at the hands of your enemy. You know what happens next though right? You really should…
Peter Panzerfaust by Kurtis Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins. Call Of Duty meets Peter Pan. Lost boys, flying through the sky, jumping through windows, Nazis… it's all good. And seriously, Call Of Duty should totally do this.
Some people have expressed concern as to how well a comic like Road Rage can actually get over the idea of a dangerous motorbike race. Well, I kind of think this does it well. Knocked over tight angles, double page layouts, and an artist who knows how to draw bodies under impact really helps.
BPRD has always been a collection of horrors, but the introduction to the new issue is something sensational, with Johann Kraus finding something very nasty inside himself – hidden by other layers of mystery. But within, and without, BPRD: Hell On Earth is as nasty as the title suggests. Lots of red ink in this one. The kind of comic that Red Lanterns wishes it could be.
Catwoman goes all Reservoir Cats on us this issue, showing a scene even Tarantino wouldn't. It's one of the many revolting scenes in this book that build up a genuine sense of dread, of power play, torture porn and a genuinely disturbing experience. Look how wide those eyes are, how narrow the pupils. It's madness, very targeted focused madness. But because she's not shagging Batman, no one seems that bothered. Catwoman is still one of the best books in the New 52.
I'm enjoying Lennox as a hard man John Constantine in Wonder Woman so very much. Almost as if, like Grant Morrison in Doom Patrol, they had to substitute the original character for one of their own making – even if he is a little . And yes, you know exactly how he's going to light that cigarette.
If the Daredevil juxtaposition was unintentional, I think this line from today's New Avengers is as intentional as all hell. So, yes, Iron Fist Vs Clor. Because you demanded it.
In Avengers, I'm getting the impression that Bendis is treating Norman Osborn a super villain version of Glenn Beck. And his supporters like the Tea Party. Thankfully their signs are less obvious this time around.
Uncanny X-Men's Kieron Gillen is a bit of a muso. Which is probably why the ultimate evolved language can be expressed on music sheets. Gillen has also stated that everything he is writing in Uncanny X-Men leads up to Avengers Vs X-Men... exactly what is Scott's conclusion after dealing with the ultimate mutant evolutionary tree… no wonder he'll want to make a deal with Phoenix.
