Hands On With Dead By Daylight At PAX East

I've greatly enjoyed this game since I checked it out at E3 last year, it's a wonderful asymmetrical horror 4-on-1 game with fantastic killers and a whole of survivors for you to choose from. Moving on from Halloween into their latest expansion, Dead by Daylight: Of Flesh and Mud has given us another female killer, the Hag. And while I'd normally get my hackles up about that name, it is a horror archetype with deep roots and I'll live with it. Because the Hag is awesome.

The Dead by Daylight portion of the Starbreeze booth was small, screened off, and prowled by actors dressed as the game's killers, giving it the sort of intimate feeling of personal terror that you'd expect of a horror game. And the actors they got were having an absolute blast stalking around the show. A few times I watched the Nurse stand compltely still, looking like a demented mannequin only to move quickly to get into someone's blindspot for a quick jump-scare.

I'd jumped into the regular line with all the con attendees, because there's nothing like waiting in line with a bunch of people to be absolutely horrified together. Team building is essential for the survivors, and as I was the only BC reporter at PAX, I needed to find allies.

I was disappointed when the killer we were matched with was not the Hag, but instead the Trapper. I've had a few runs against the Trapper and have lost horribly just about every time. Not that I didn't enjoy it, I tend to throw myself at the killer to let my teammates keep going, because as long as one of us survives it's been a good day.

Sadly, all of us died to our Trapper. He was very dedicated at the whole bait and wait game, so, solid choice there. We were hanging around the new map though which was good. The Swamp came with its own challenges and advantages against a killer like the Trapper. There are plenty of places to hide, but it's also very easy to get yourself caught in a trap thanks to the fog and swampy ground.

If only we'd been against Michael Meyers. That mask would have been easy to pick out of the fog.

With Patch 1.4.2 Left Behind bringing back the survivor Bill, giving us a whole host of new outfits, and bug fixes, Dead by Daylight is slicker than ever. If you haven't checked this game out yet, I really think you need to. It's on Steam for Windows.

And hey, it was the game that boosted Starbreeze Studio's profits for the year nearly single-handedly.

The original teaser for The Hag is below.
