Lawbreakers Development Has Been Suspended By Developer

Boss Key Productions has come out and publicly said that development on Lawbreakers is being suspended so the developer can focus on other projects.

Lawbreakers

I feel bad for Lawbreakers. The game was a perfectly decent online shooter and it didn't feel like much on the market. As a throwback to the pace and movement of Quake and Unreal, it was fast paced FPS arena shooting and I certainly had fun with it for the few hours I put in. It famously didn't catch on though, with dismal player numbers pretty early on. Publisher Nexon has publicly spoken about the game's poor performance and its fortune hasn't quite turned around either.

Perhaps it's unsurprising then that the developer is seemingly moving on from the project… at least for now. In a statement posted by the developer, they said they are moving resources to other projects, however, leave the door open to revive Lawbreakers later down the line. In the statement, the developer said:

The fact is LawBreakers failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained in the manner we had originally planned for and anticipated. And while a pivot to free-to-play may seem like easiest change to make, a change of this magnitude takes publishing planning and resources to do it.

The team here has worked hard on this game over the past three and a half years and our studio is determined to give this game the second life it deserves. However, between now and then, we cannot sit idle. We will continue to support the game in its current state, but we also need to focus on other projects with fresh creative leaders. We have been working on something new and we can't wait to share more about it. It's a passion project that we're in complete control of.

It's always a bit sad to see a game fall by the wayside. I do hope the developer can find 'something' to do to give it that second lease of life. As mentioned the free-to-play move could be a great way to do it, but that isn't an easy change. We will have to see if this is the real end of Lawbreakers.
