Romance Of The Three Kingdoms XIII – Fame And Strategy Expansion Review

For an expansion pack, Fame and Strategy is alright. The biggest thing brought by the DLC were the fame and war council systems, rather than the actual story expansion content. The fame system allows players to work toward receiving bonuses for their characters by collecting achievements. Those achievements range from fulfilling specific battle objectives or by resolving disputes by avoiding battle altogether. Also as part of the fame system are prestige titles for their characters. Unlike vanity titles, these do unlock new actions for characters based on their prestige level.

As for the war council, it's basically a strategy meeting held before every battle. This allows your generals to chose which officers will follow them into combat and what strategies they plan to employ. This one is great for players who like to stay about ten steps ahead of their competition.

Koei Tecmo also added an Event Editor which allows you to create your own stories within the world of Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII. Which is something people wanted? I didn't use this feature much, but it'll definitely be the kind of thing some players are interested in. I didn't find writing my own encounters to be particularly satisfying, as I'm more than happy to clear the pre-set encounters and call the game finished.

To be honest, the two new systems are the best part of the expansion, because they function as a quality of life boost to the game. Being able to set strategies before the battle, hand-pick your officers, and gaining new skills were sorely needed and both work out decently alright, though the execution could be a bit smoother with both. But that doesn't really make the DLC quite worth the price tag. The War Council and Fame systems should have been part of Romance of the Three Kingdoms XII from the start. Or at the very least, these should have been free.

Because without them, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is pretty much an absolute grind to play.
