Sony CEO Believes That Pokemon Go Is A Game Changer; Will Bring A Mobile Gaming Focus To Division
Pokemon Go is one of the biggest gaming phenomenon in a long time. While the app has almost certainly met its peak and is tapering off, it still remains very popular, and perhaps more importantly, the industry is taking note of the massive success.
Sony CEO Kaz Hirai is one such party. Speaking to The Financial Times (via MCV), he spoke about how he thinks the app will changhe the industry and how Sony will likely be following suit.
Pokémon Go is a real game-changer. I'm very interested in the fact that it has the potential to really change the way people move, literally. [It is an] innovative idea that's going to lift all boats for the video game industry.
He added that Sony's gaming division absolutely intends to get into mobile spaces, saying:
[Mobile gaming] is something we are aggressively getting into. It's quite a shift from being just a console-based business to being on mobile phones as well. It is a very important part of the Japanese market and therefore we've created a wholly-owned subsidiary that's completely dedicated to mobile gaming. They'll be coming out with titles.
If this leads to good Sony mobile games? Sure, I'm all for it. However, I'm not convinced that Pokemon Go wasn't lightening in a bottle of the right idea and right brand at the right time. However, that doesn't mean that PlayStation can't find a way to get into mobile with quality products, even ARG titles. Watch this space.
