We Preview The Guild 3 As It Sits In Early Access

After a lot of hype at E3, THQ Nordic released The Guild 3 onto PC back in late September on Steam's Early Access. Seeing as how we have no official word from THQ as to a real launch date, and that we've been playing the game for a while, we're going to give a preliminary look at the build we have today as the continually update it with new patches.

The Guild 3 is essentially a far more improved version of its predecessors that were published by JoWooD Productions and Deep Silver, with the last game in the series released back in 2006. The game puts you in the position of a common person living in the late 1200's of what would be considered a European nation. You'll choose your abilities and strengths at the start, which will form the basis for your family's heritage in the game. You will live your life and cultivate a family like anyone at this time did you keep their bloodlines running and the town plentiful and populated, while doing the work of your chosen vocation.

As you grow, so do your surroundings as you become a member of the community with high or low standing, depending on what you choose to do with your life. When your character dies, your offspring take over what you left behind, gaining one or two of your skills in the process before starting their own journey. The game is built on generational expansion so that you can go from being poor farmers to sought-after workers to politicians to possible lords in the kingdom your family started in. But beware, you can also take darker paths and become one of the vilest families in the kingdom with no good words for anyone to speak of you.

A lot of the game depends on your ability to achieve great things in your lifetime, done through a combination of skill trees and lifetime experience. You may start out as a common carpenter, but that doesn't mean you'll one day become the king's prized toy maker. And just because you're a successful leader beyond the kingdom gates doesn't mean anyone within them will respect you and take you seriously. Much of your focus will be on your home, your livelihood, your family, and how you benefit your city as a whole. Take your eye off the ball and you'll spend hours meddling and get nowhere.

The Guild 3 is an awesome experience and it's fun to play, but be warned that this is a highly addictive simulator that will basically take away complete days of your life if you're not careful. To see where you start and where you end are interesting prospects worth studying and exploring, and you can become lost in the game's rich environment and frequent challenges to better yourself. I'm interested to see when the final version comes out and how it shapes up to the current build.
