When Will More Mega Pokémon Be Released In Pokémon GO?

With January 2024's full slate of Pokémon GO content announced, we are left with yet another month of no new Mega Raids. Why is this?

Article Summary

  • January 2024 Mega Raids in Pokémon GO feature returning Pokémon without new additions.
  • Ten Mega Evolutions, including fan-favorites like Mega Lucario, are still expected to debut.
  • Niantic may delay the Galar release to complete the Mega Raid rollouts first.
  • Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics are anticipated to bring significant changes to raids.

Niantic has announced the Mega Raids coming to Pokémon GO in January 2024. Again, it is a slate that features no new releases. When will more Mega Pokémon be released in Pokémon GO?

Here are the Mega Pokémon that will appear in Mega Raids in Pokémon GO this January 2024:

  • January 1st – January 10th: Mega Ampharos (can be Shiny)
  • January 10th – January 24th: Mega Meditite (can be Shiny)
  • January 24th – January 31st: Mega Steelix (can be Shiny)

There are still ten Mega Evolutions missing from Pokémon GO. They include:

  • Mega Audino
  • Mega Camerupt
  • Mega Gallade
  • Mega Heracross
  • Mega Lucario
  • Mega Mawile
  • Mega Metagross
  • Mega Mewtwo X
  • Mega Mewtwo Y
  • Mega Sharpedo

Now, there are still quite a few more Megas that have been released than haven't. However, I theorized earlier this week that we would not see a generational release for Galar until the Megas were fully released, as it feels like one of the only reasons that Niantic would skip Galar in favor of Paldea would be because Niantic is not yet ready to roll out Gigantamax and Dynamax as a mechanic or Raid-type. I wrote:

The introduction of Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanic will likely bring a huge change to Pokémon GO. It will almost certainly impact raiding and is expected to, when it does arrive, bring a new kind of raid, much like Mega Raids did. Niantic is still rolling out Mega Raids, however, with many of the most important species yet to come. I think it's safe to assume that Niantic is pushing off Galar in order to finish up the release of Mega Raids, with a Gigantamax and Dynamax mechanic planned for a later release.

I don't believe we will get all of the Mega Pokémon this year, but unless Niantic plans to either skip a generation reveal next fall or release Galar without the Gigantamax of Dynamax mechanic, it remains to be seen how these new Raids will exist alongside Mega Raids.
