It's been several years since the release of Disney's live-action Aladdin, and considering there haven't been any promising new updates about a follow-up film, it seems even less likely that a sequel will find its way into production. Now, the actor behind the film's titular role is sharing his thoughts on the franchise's future in its current iteration.
Mena Massoud Isn't Currently Anticipating an Aladdin Sequel
When Aladdin's Mena Massoud was recently speaking with Screen Rant about a new project, the publication asked the actor about the current status of the film's potential sequel, where he seemed less than sure about its current chances of moving forward. Massoud tells the site, "I don't have any [Aladdin 2] updates. I think, like you said, the strike kind of just put everything on hold. I know they were trying to get it off the ground for a long time, but I have no idea where it's at." He then elaborates, "Listen, we shot in 2017. It's been six years now since we shot and wrapped the project. To me, at a certain point, life just goes on. I'm sure they have their reasons. I know they were trying for a long time, so I don't know what the obstacles exactly were. But maybe now, after the strike is over, they'll continue to try to get it off the ground."
Earlier this year, the film's director expressed an interest in returning for another chapter of Aladdin's story, telling Collider, "I'd very much like to [return]. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun. I would very much like to; we'll wait and see. We have been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it'd be great to do; it would be great to go back there."
The live-action version of Aladdin is currently available to stream on Disney+.
