Americans Paid $25 Million To Watch The Emoji Movie This Weekend

The latest in a long string of poor decisions, Americans spent more than $25 million on tickets to The Emoji Movie, according to box office estimates. The film, which launched with 0% Rotten Tomatoes ranking (now at 8%), was widely panned by critics for failing to live up to expectations, even expectations as low a movie about ****ing emojis deserves. The domestic total also includes Canadians, who must shoulder some of the blame for all of this.

Rewarding Sony with millions of dollars for making The Emoji Movie is far from the worst thing Americans have done recently. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. still isn't canceled after four seasons, Captain America is an agent of Hydra, Taco Bell serves breakfast now, and you should see the Bleeding Cool comment section. Oh yeah, and Donald Trump is the president. Even so, the success of The Emoji Movie feels like, if not the culmination, at least a perfect illustration of everything we've been working toward as a culture for the past few decades.

The Emoji Movie's $25.6 million put it second at the box office this weekend, behind Dunkirk ($28.1 million) and ahead of Girls Trip ($20 million) and Atomic Blonde ($18.6 million).
