Avalanche: 'Destruction In Just Cause 3 Will Make You Michael Bay'

Just Cause is a franchise that is no stranger to destruction. In fact, you could probably make a pretty convincing case for it being one of the defining features of the series. When I think of the games, I think of either blowing up cranes with huge explosions or tethering a bad guy to an explosive before shooting it and seeing him be zipped off into the horizon.

Avalanche Studios own Andreas Bodbacka sat down with Official Xbox Magazine (via GamesRadar) to discuss this very component in context of Just Cause 3. He explained how the new consoles have let the developer explore this iconic destruction.

We wanted destruction to be more physics-driven and more like a fun toybox that can be used as part of the gameplay. More than looking pretty and going boom, if you tether things correctly you can use them defensively or create cascading destruction – destroying an entire base just by pulling one tether. That wasn't possible before, but improvements in technology let you do this stuff.

He then went on to explain that this isn't supposed to be over the top for the sake of it though:

Finding that sweet spot between cool  and realistic is difficult. It's really about creating drama in destruction. If you shoot one thing and it goes boom, you can do it a couple of times and know it'll go boom – and soon it's not so much fun. But if you attach it to a helicopter or shoot its supports and they crumble and it begins to roll away… well, you're now directing all that destruction. You're Michael Bay.

From what I saw at E3, he isn't lying either. The chance for destruction, in creative and thoughtful ways is everywhere. You just have to have the imagination to pull it off.
