Article Summary

Blumhouse and Atomic Monster have finally completed their merger. A year in the making, the horror powerhouses made the announcement this afternoon, the week that their new collaboration, Night Swim, is due to hit theaters. The two companies will continue to operate separately, but their combined projects are expected to increase in number. Their first major pairing was last January's hit M3gan, which has a sequel announced for January 2025 and is in active production. The announcement was made, and Blumhouse's Jason Blum confirmed the deal on X. He and James Wan have just become one of the most powerful duos in Hollywood. Deadline had some of the details of the deal.
Blumhouse, Atomic Monster Become A Horror Powerhouse
From 2022, when these merger talks first became a thing: "James is probably 70 to 80 percent artist and 30 to 20 percent business person, and I am the reverse," Mr. Blum said in an interview at Universal headquarters. James Wan added, "We really do complement each other, yin and yang, which is part of what makes this so exciting." "I don't have one idea to turn into a horror movie," Blum said. "Not one. I built a business by recognizing great ideas from other people." "I have so many ideas — so many ideas — more than I can handle by myself," Mr. Wan said, also saying he wants to expand into podcasts, live shows, video games, and merch.
The real winner here is Universal, which will have first-look rights to be the distributor for all of this output. Atomic Monster had a first-look deal with Warner Bros., but that has expired, and they will now be a part of the Blumhouse deal with Universal. It's wild how things change so fast in Hollywood. WB was on top of the horror world, in large part thanks to Wan in 2019. Thanks to Blumhouse, Universal has taken that crown these last three years, with hit after hit like Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends, Five Nights At Freddy's, M3GAN, and more. Now, they get them both.
