Emma Stone Has A Slight Update On Cruella 2

Poor Things star Emma Stone has a slight update on Cruella 2, hoping that filming for the sequel will start "sooner rather than later."

Article Summary

  • Emma Stone hints at progress on Cruella 2, anticipating a hopeful start to filming.
  • Cruella sequel remains in development limbo two and a half years after confirmation.
  • Screenwriter Tony McNamara shares potential ideas for the anticipated follow-up.
  • Despite delays, fans remain eager for the return of Stone's stylish and wicked Cruella.

The pandemic threw a lot of movies into chaos, and by the time 2020 came to an end, it was becoming more and more apparent that this wasn't going to be something that went away quickly. Some studios were all right with releasing movies on streaming like Universal, while others were a little slower to make the change. However, the new year meant that studios could no longer afford to sit on completed movies for months or even years at a time. Warner Bros. and Disney released several films in a hybrid release style. Cruella was one of those films that did well via a hybrid release and was actually greenlit for a sequel. However, we haven't heard anything about it since. Star Emma Stone is having an incredible year with Poor Things, but Variety (via Total Film) recently asked her if she knew when Cruella 2 would start filming. However, Stone didn't seem to know much more than we do, as the public, and said, "Hopefully sooner rather than later. There's a work-in-progress kind of thing going on. We'll see… She's a blast, so we'll see."

Last month, writer Tony McNamara pitched some of his ideas of what Cruella 2 could entail, but it sounds like this film is still very much in the early stages even though it was greenlit two and a half years ago. That doesn't mean anything one way or another. Cruella was a lot better than it had any right to be, and if we need to wait for the sequel for it to be good, then we'll happily wait.

Cruella: Summary, Cast List, Release Date

Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (La La Land) stars in Disney's Cruella, an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of the cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together, they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella's flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella.

Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis. It stars Emma Stone as the titular character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong. It was released on May 28, 2021, in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access.
