Fantastic Beasts: David Yates Says The Series Is "All Just Parked"

Fantastic Beasts director David Yates has confirmed that the franchise is "all just parked," and there don't appear to be plans for any more films.

Article Summary

  • Director David Yates confirms the Fantastic Beasts franchise is "all just parked".
  • The franchise struggled with dwindling box office numbers and divided audience views.
  • Warner Bros. Discovery is shifting focus, planning a television reboot of the original Harry Potter series.
  • Despite controversy, J.K. Rowling's involvement with the Wizarding World remains undeterred.

None of us should be surprised, but here we are. The Fantastic Beasts series is what happens when you have to give in to the whims and demands of an author who is so full of herself that she believes anything she writes will succeed just because she wrote it and her name is on it. However, these movies failed in so many different ways. While the first film was okay, the second and third split the audience, with one half wanting to see more of the Dumbledore and Grindelwald story and getting annoyed whenever we cut back to Newt and the other half loving all of these new characters and wondering why we had to keep cutting back to these other two guys. The box office has fallen since the first film, with the third underperforming by a lot even after it was severely re-written. Last we heard from star Eddie Redmayne back in January that there weren't any new films on the way. Now, director David Yates is more or less confirming that the series is on the back burner for the foreseeable future in a recent interview with Inside Total Film Postcast (via Total Film).

"With Beasts, it's all just parked," Yates explained. "We made those three movies, the last one through a pandemic, and it was enormous fun, but it was tough. We were actually filming when there wasn't a vaccine. Thankfully, no one got sick, but we did have the most detailed protocols in place. … We're all so proud of [Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore], and when it went out into the world, we just needed to sort of stop and pause, and take it easy."

Warner Bros. Discovery is moving ahead with a television reboot of the original franchise, so it isn't surprising that the Fantastic Beasts franchise is over and done. The idea of exploring the world of Harry Potter without any Harry Potter isn't bad, but the way everything was mishandled, it just didn't work. What fans thought they were getting in the first movie wasn't what the franchise was actually about in movies two and three. It buried the lead to the detriment of the following films. Unfortunately, Rowling isn't going anywhere despite her horrendous views, and neither is the world of Harry Potter, not if Warner Bros. Discovery has anything to say about it.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore: Summary, Cast List, Release Date

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches, and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald's growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

The film features an ensemble cast led by Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), two-time Oscar nominee Jude Law (Cold Mountain, The Talented Mr. Ripley), Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, Katherine Waterston, and Mads Mikkelsen. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is directed by David Yates from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling & Steve Kloves, based upon a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. It was released on April 15, 2022.
