In Praise Of… Jim Howick
I first became properly aware of Jim Howick, as many British parents and children did, through his star comedy performance over five years of the sketch show Horrible Histories. His King Richard III still sticks out "Can you imagine it, I'm the last Plantagenet"
As does his role as Douglas Barder in the history of the Battle Of Britain in boy band style…
Sticking with the same acting/writing troop, he made Yonderland for Sky
And the film Bill, where he played Christopher Marlowe, struggling to write "Your Momma" jokes
And while he has a history of short films,
And as love rival Gerard in Peep Show…
In the last few weeks his profile seems to have been raised somewhat, starring as Ian, the lead in the riposte-to-the-Hangover-films, the survival thriller Stag for the BBC.
And again for the Being Human/Robots/In The Flesh/Misfits-type drama from E4, Aliens.
Writer, comedian, producer, he has a star turn at being a podgy, unassuming white English man who can, despite himself, rise to the challenge – even when complaining about it all the time.
He's our new Arthur Dent, he's our new Tim from The Office, he's our new put upon everyman, and it's great to see him as an emerging star. You know what this means….
Game Of Thrones. A Marvel TV/movie. Something with hobbits in it. Something that will waste his extraordinary talent but pay off the mortgage. You know it's coming…
If they hadn't cast Foggy in Daredevil, he'd be perfect. He'd have been a fine Everett Ross in Black Panther too… but they cast Tim from The Office in that one.
