Is Sonequa Martin-Green's Star Trek: Discovery Character A Vulcan?

With Star Trek: Discovery getting a September 24th premiere date, more information about the show is starting to come out. In an interview with EW.com, former The Walking Dead actress Sonequa Martin-Green talked about her lead role in the series of First Officer Michael Burnham. The female character deliberately has a man's name and while her past is still a mystery, we now know whether she is Vulcan or Human.

The confusion comes from a scene in the trailer showing hints that she had a Vulcan past, but Burnham is fully human and is the first human to attend the Vulcan Learning Center as a child and she went on to the Vulcan Science Academy. She has a close relationship with Spock's father, Sarek played by James Frain.

Martin-Green goes on to say,

I'm the first officer on the U.S.S. Shenzhou that is captained by Captain Philippa Georgiou, who is played by the amazing Michelle Yeoh. I have an inner war and it's a journey of self discovery and finding out what it means to be alive, to be human, to be a Starfleet officer, what it means to be a hero.

Green went on to confirm that she has a relation ship with Amanda Grayson as well, Spock's mother,

I have the Vulcan conflict in my life from Sarek and Amanda so there's always going to be that inner conflict with me. But I think it's relatable because we all have some kind of inner conflict going on — who we are versus who we present ourselves to be. There's a lot to be discovered.

That clears up just a tiny bit of the mystery around the character, we'll have to wait until September to find out why she went to Vulcan and how the connection to Sarek and Amanda came about. Casting for Amanda has not been announced.
