Kevin Feige's Non-Update on Marvel Studios Phase 4
Surprising no one, Kevin Feige isn't saying much (if anything at all) about Marvel Studios plans for the upcoming Phase 4 slate of MCU films. To be fair, this is the usual MO for Disney and the 10-years-strong set of comic book films; not to highlight upcoming things til the current things hit theaters.
Specifically, during the Captain Marvel press junket just this past week, Feige confirmed to the on-hand press that the Phase 4 announcements and updates won't be coming til well after Avengers: End Game and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
"As we've been doing for years, we aren't going to announce anything post Avengers: Endgameor Spider-Man until post Endgame and Spider-Man. As you know as a fan, there's a tremendous amount of potential and a tremendous amount of additional characters and storylines and groups of characters that we're going to keep playing with. And again, that's a testament to Marvel and to the amount of storylines and characters and amazing, amazing runs that have been in the Marvel comics."
The current expected slate for Phase 4 includes Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, the solo Black Widow film, Eternals, and the possibility for the Fox-owned Marvel Comics properties to get tossed in the mix if/when the Disney-Fox merger happens. Could this possibly mean even MORE Marvel Studios films being released annually?
"We've always said there are no mandates to make any more than two films a year. But, as we've seen the last couple years, when it naturally happens, and when there are ideas and when there are teams ready to go, we're not going to hold something back."
Don't expect to see the X-Men or the Fantastic Four joining the MCU anytime soon though, despite the reports of "plans" being in the works, as Kevin Feige concluded:
"I don't think we'll be announcing five or six years, but we know sort of where we want to head in the next five or six years,"
We will of course let you know what we hear about the coming slate of Marvel Studios releases.
Captain Marvel will hit theaters on March 8th 2019, Avengers: End Game on April 26th, and Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5th.
