Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Luke Hasn't Gone To The Dark Side, Says Mark Hamill

There has been a lot of debate about what kind of character Luke Skywalker is going to be in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. There are a lot of people assuming that Luke is going to end up the bad guy, but Mark Hamill assured fans in a Disney Rewards Insider interview that it isn't the case.

When asked how Luke has changed over the years, Hamill explained:

"Actually, I don't think Luke's fundamental personality has changed, except that he is older and his life experiences have shaped his outlook the same way they do for all of us."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Luke Hasn't Gone To The Dark Side, Says Mark Hamill

Luke has been described as "dark" in this movie, but Hamill believes it's not that simple:

"In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn't gone to the dark side. This isn't an evil version of him. But it's still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It's a real challenge."

As for the line "It's time for the Jedi to end," Hamill liked the line and that the movie is filled with lots of moments that will take everyone by surprise. He continued:

"I'm sure this line is a great shock to the audience, so you can imagine how I felt! This is a huge change for a character who once represented optimism and hope. It's a radical decision to drop out of everything he's ever believed in. The entire movie is filled with these kinds of jaw-dropping surprises, but you'll just have to see the film itself to discover what they are."

So it sounds like all of those theories about Luke being the villain of The Last Jedi aren't correct — or at least that is what Hamill is saying right now. Maybe that'll change, but seeing a Luke Skywalker who has lost hope is going to make for an interesting movie, at least.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
