Lionsgate has a new werewolf film in the works, Big Bad and they have hired Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon to helm it.

Article Summary

  • New werewolf film 'Big Bad' set to be directed by Christopher Landon.
  • Based on Chandler Baker's short, the script will explore a family's tense night.
  • Lionsgate's gain is Screen Gems' loss as Landon exits Scream 7 for 'Big Bad'.
  • Call for classic werewolf aesthetics over modern 'big dog' depictions in cinema.

Big Bad is a new werewolf film coming from Lionsgate, and they just had a director fall into their lap. After exiting Scream 7 and all the franchise issues, Christopher Landon has stepped into the director's seat for this one. He will helm the project, based on a short by Chandler Baker, who will write the script for the feature film, according to Deadline. Todd Lieberman and Hidden Pictures will be produced with Landon. This is a big get for Lionsgate and, as we already know, a significant loss for Screen Gems and the Scream franchise.

Can Big Bad Usher In A New Werewolf Renaissance?

Here is the Big Bad description from the short story collection Creature Feature that it was a part of: The Strauss family is on knife's edge. Sam is a resentful stay-at-home dad. Rachel feels the restlessness in her blood returning. Their children are getting out of hand. And a recent mudslide has forced the wolves out of the woods to look for food. As dusk falls and tensions rise, the family must come together to survive the night — from the threats outside and those within.

Man, as a fan of werewolves, we seem to be eating good right now. Not only is Big Bad announced, but we also have Blumhouse's remake of The Wolf Man coming in October as well. My only ask for these productions is two-fold: please, don't just make the werewolves look like big dogs, and have them walk upright. Too many modern lycanthrope stories just got the Twilight route and have a giant dog onscreen, and it looks terrible and is not a werewolf. Now, let's go more with the original Wolf Man look or, even better, The Monster Squad look. That one was perfect.

Expect to hear more on Big Bad as we learn it.
