Marvel's Daredevil Season 2 – Checking Out The Blu-ray

The second season of Marvel's Daredevil is now out on Blu-ray. The original 13-part series came out on Netflix March 18th, 2016 and featured the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, Elden Hensen as Foggy Nelson and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page. The season kicks off shortly after the fall of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) at the end of season one and spends the four first episodes introducing us to and dealing with Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), the man known as the Punisher. Those four episodes could stand on their own and make for a great little story.

From episode five, the show expands in two directions. Nelson & Murdock take on Castle's case and that is where Foggy and Karen focus their attention, while Matt becomes very distracted by his ex-girlfriend coming back to town, Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung). This pulls Daredevil into a confrontation with the Hand and the return of his old mentor, Stick (Scott Glenn). The middle episodes are quite scattered and drag on a bit. They establish the past between Matt and Elektra and we see Karen becoming more of a reporter as she digs into what happened to Frank. But Matt is flaking on the case and tearing apart his law firm and friendship with Foggy who worries about his friend running around as the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.

Castle sabotage's his own case and goes to prison where he meets Fisk. It's quite the revelation when Fisk returns and the episode is one of the best in the series. Fisk deals with Castle and has a meeting with Matt and he steals ever scene he's in hands down. There is also an amazing fight scene in prison in the hallway along the cells… man Marvel/Netflix loves hallway fight scenes, this is the second in the season. The series continues to the two storylines as Frank and Karen dig into why Frank's wife and child were really killed while Matt deal with Elektra, Stick and the Hand. It leads to a pretty awesome finale with a rooftop battle to remember.

The season was good with some very high points, but at times seemed lost and really could've used to focus on one story in the middle, but it became half a Daredevil story and half a Punisher story. The first season was stronger in that it has a single, straight through storyline, like a comic book mini-series, while the second season felt more like an on-going series that you realize was going some place once you get there.

As for the Blu-ray. It has a Joe Quesada cover and features all 13 episodes split over four discs. There are no special features of any kind. This was the same with season one. It's just the episodes, so the main reason to buy it is either you don't have or want Netflix or you're worried that your internet might go out when you have an urge to watch the series. The lack of bonus features is disappointing, but it is nice to have the whole season in one case to put next to the rest of my MCU collection.

Marvel's The Punisher will be the next released from this group of series and Daredevil season 2 is in the works. Marvel's The Defenders has recently been released on Netflix and features Charlie Cox, Elodie Yung, Scott Glenn, Elden Hensen, Rosario Dawson and Deborah Ann Woll.
