Moana, Doctor Strange Push Disney Closer To All-Time Box Office Record
At the beginning of November, Bleeding Cool told you how Disney had already broken their previous yearly box office record of $5.84 billion, and were on track to break the all-time record of $6.89 billion, currently held by Universal. Since that time, Doctor Strange has been released and amassed $582 million in revenue, and Moana is off to a good start on its 5-day Thanksgiving opening weekend, earning $25 million so far with projections as high as $90 million for the whole weekend. That would put it about on par with Doctor Strange's $85 million opening, and on track to do similar numbers. Those two alone would put Disney over the limit, and it doesn't even take into account Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which opens on December 16.
In addition to Captain America: Civil War, the highest grossing movie of the year, both Finding Dory and Zootopia brought in more than $1 billion each for Disney, along with nearly a billion from The Jungle Book. When all is said and done, Disney could be looking at more than $7 billion in box office revenue. In related news, one of their employees has just rejoined Twitter, where he routinely engages in internet flamewars with fans, Bleeding Cool reported earlier today.
Moana stars 2020 presidential candidate Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho, and is in theaters now. Read Bleeding Cool's review of Moana here.
