Night Swim's Kerry Condon Was Eager to Explore the Horror Genre
Night Swim star and award-winning actor Kerry Condon reveals what initially drew her to the horror genre for the new Blumhouse flick.
Article Summary
- Kerry Condon of 'Night Swim' shares her intrigue for the horror genre.
- 'Three Billboards' star seeks to show her range in Blumhouse film.
- Condon admires the challenge of acting in horror, a less awarded genre.
- Horror's complexity highlighted as demanding, deserving of recognition.
Horror has always been an overlooked genre for award circuits, with various top-tier performances often being overlooked repeatedly (including Mia Goth, who deserves everything). So when we get a BAFTA winner and an Academy Award nominee to enter the horror chat, it's a win for the genre as a whole, as seen in the recent Blumhouse flick Night Swim.
During an interview with /Film to promote the release of Night Swim, actor Kerry Condon was asked what drew her to the genre, with Condon revealing, "I've always liked doing things that everyone else doesn't do. It's kind of why I smoked for 20 years. [laughs] Everyone in L.A. is like, 'Why is she smoking?' I was like, 'Because you're all not.' [laughs] So one of the reasons is because I hadn't done it, and I've always wanted to be a character actress or an actress that could do comedy and drama and do all sorts of things."
The Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star adds, "So I wanted to try it. I didn't know if it would be something that would be my forte, but I was really interested in trying it and I really admired a lot of actors that had done it because it's a lot harder than you think it is. It's almost like they should give awards to people who do something that's harder than an easier part. So what drew me to it was that I hadn't done it, and I wanted to try it and that I could show more range."
Night Swim Cast and Official Summary
The film's official synopsis notes, "Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, the film stars Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (Oscar® nominee Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin), teenage daughter Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle, this fall's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and young son Elliot (Gavin Warren, Fear the Walking Dead). Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home's shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home's past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under into the depths of inescapable terror."
Night Swim is in theaters now.
