Report: Multiplayer Friday The 13th Coming October 2015
The last Friday the 13th game lives in Infamy as somewhat of a cult classic. The kind of cult classic that is remembered for being pretty awful mind. The 1989 NES title let you control 6 counsellors running from the iconic Jason. It was a mess with wonky platforming, as well as a strange mode where one of the counsellors squared off with Jason in Punch-Out type play. It was a pretty odd game.
Well, it looks like the franchise might be getting another stab of the apple in 2015. According to EGM, a new Friday the 13th game will be an "asymmetrical, co-operative and competitive multiplayer predator/prey horror experience" (That is a mouthful). Essentially, one player will play as Jason and the rest will be squealing teenagers at Camp Crystal Lake. That sounds like a neat idea. The execution of atmosphere will be key though.
The director of the original Friday the 13th, Sean S. Cunningham reportedly said:
With a new television series on the horizon and plans announced for the thirteenth installment of the film franchise, we felt the timing was right to finally explore Jason, Camp Crystal Lake, and the rest of the Friday the 13th story in interactive form."
EGM said that the game is being developed by an 'experienced game studio' and that it'll be officially announced in the coming weeks. The site also said the game is expected October, 2015.
Like I said, earlier, I think there is real potential in this concept. It could be great if it's given the proper care and attention. I do worry that it might be shovelware though to capitalize on Friday the 13th returning.
