Agents of SHIELD Season 5, Episode 20 Recap: The One Who Will Save Us All

Tonight's Agents of SHIELD had the biggest tie in to Avengers: Infinity War without actually being affected by the film yet. It picks up right from where the last one ended, Glenn Talbot (Adrian Pasdar) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) floating up to meet the alien ship and confront Qovas (Peter Mensah) and the Confederacy. As the episode goes forward, we see Talbot become a bit more paranoid, a bit more self-important, and pretty much crazy.

When Coulson's negotiating isn't going well, Talbot crushes one of the aliens and forces all the others to kneel. They get Hale (Catherine Dent) out of her cell and figure out that they need to meet with the Confederacy to renegotiate the deal. To do so, Talbot gets a shave and a new outfit and pretty much becomes the character Graviton from the comics.

Back on Earth, the team is still infighting. Mack (Henry Simmons) is still upset with Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) and by extension Fitz (Iain de Caestecker). Daisy (Chloe Bennet) returns with her mom's bones in a bag and gets into a fight with Yo-Yo that has to be broken up by May (Ming-Na Wen), who then announces that they are getting the Zephyr space ready and going after Coulson. Deke (Jeff Ward) is still hooked on Daisy, putting lemons in her bed, and Daisy admits that she is still in love with Lincoln.

Talbot goes to meet with the Confederacy, and when they treat him like a waste of flesh, he finds out their pseudo leader and absorbs him, creating an open seat among the confederacy. The other members still seem hesitant, but Kasius's father is there and tells Talbot that Thanos is attacking the Earth. He says that the Confederacy had no intention of fighting with the humans and that the only way to save the Earth is for Talbot to find the rest of the gravitonium on Earth into him. Talbot goes back and relays the plan to Coulson, who doesn't think it's a good idea and balks at trusting a Kasius. Talbot doesn't take well to Coulson's response and forces him to kneel. Then the Zephyr docks, and Talbot takes it as an attack and that SHIELD is the enemy.

When May and Daisy fight their way to the bridge, Talbot threatens to crush Coulson. Hale uses the conditioning command words to try to control Talbot, but it doesn't work and he kills her. Daisy tries to Quake him with almost no effect, and he takes her out and forces May and Coulson to give up. They're taken away. Now Talbot is determined to get the rest of the gravitonium so he can stop Thanos… and it appears he's given Daisy to the older Kasius.

The Verdict

Only two episodes left, and things are getting really interesting. They've acknowledged Thanos, which leaves the question: will the events at the end of the film affect any of the agents? And will Talbot going after the gravitonium be the reason the Earth breaks apart? I'm guessing the Earth won't be blown apart or it's going to change a lot of the movies going forward.

What's Next

It's still unknown if the series will be back, but it's obvious that the writers are trying to pull out all the stops, revisit a lot of the past, and give a season finale that will work as a series finale. But in doing so, the show is getting a but crazy and the infighting among the characters is a bit much. Between two characters would be fine, but all of the anger just doesn't feel right for what might be the ending of the series.
