The Six Important Moments From This Week's Gotham

This weeks episode of Gotham, called the Scarecrow, was the second part of the story of Dr. Gerald Crane (Julian Sands) that started with The Fearsome Dr. Crane last week. But besides the introduction of one of Batman's darkest villains… and that's saying a lot… this episode had some very important moments outside of the main story.

1) Jim Gordon's new love interest, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, has come to work for the GCPD as the coroner. Which is all well and good except Gordon has made a lot of enemies on the force and higher ups and now he has a glaring weakness in the basement of the building. Gordon's success has come from his 'nothing to lose' attitude. When he was with Barbara Keen, she was used against him by Carmine Falcone… with her gone he was more daring. Now he has someone to worry about again. Shouldn't be long before Lee is used against him at a very bad time.

2) Falcone rewards Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin with Fish Mooney's club. That has been Penguin's thing in the comics for a long time, his night club. So it's cool to see that part of the mythos dropping into place, but more importantly this is Penguin coming out of the shadows and openly working for Don Falcone. This creates a whole new dynamic for the show.

3) Since his parents death, Bruce Wayne has been locked inside his own head trying to make sense of the world logically and working out who did it. Because focusing on a puzzle keeps him from feeling their loss. Selina Kyle pulled him out a little, but he closed right up again when she turned on him. This hike he used to take with his dad allows Bruce to get out on his own, forget the police reports and cork board mystery and deal with his emotions… he is hurt, lonely and most of all angry. And getting that anger out will be what allows the character to grow. Also the fact he had to rely on himself to survive… yes Alfred Pennyworth was at the top of the hill be he didn't know that… these are the type of moments that make boys into men.

4) Things just aren't going so well for Fish. Each time she thinks she's gotten away, something worse happens. Now kidnapped by pirates and thrown into a holding cell that makes Lord of the Flies seem orderly, she has to stand her ground and take charge. The only problem is she has no idea where she is or what she is dealing with. So just when she triumphantly takes over the prison, a girl is thrown back in with her eyes having been removed…. basically letting Fish know she's not in control of anything anymore.

5) In what was actually a sad moment in the episode, Oswald personally delivers an invitation to his new club to his only friend… Gordon. The problem is Gordon doesn't think of Penguin as a friend. He's just another one of the criminal element in Gotham that needs to be locked up. But Penguin's reaction to the rejection is kind of heartbreaking. How much of what Oswald is comes from the fact that he doesn't have anyone in his life who cares about him, who like him or calls him a friend? It was a very humanizing moment for someone we've watched manipulate everyone over the course of the last dozen episodes. Oswald genuinely wants Jim to be his friend.

6) What may be the most important moment takes place in the scene with Falcone and Maroni. The two have agreed to terms over Maroni laying off of the Penguin. Maroni asks why Falcone wants Penguin so much… he basically says that its nice to have a smart man as your number two who knows he is too freakish to ever be the big boss. This is what lead to Fish's downfall and will eventually lead to both Maroni and Falcone being taken down. The longer they allow Penguin to play his games of manipulation, the more powerful he will become and unlike the others… he doesn't think himself too freakish to be in charge.

Bonus) The bonus moment had to be Penguin meeting the soon-to-be Riddler, Edward Nigma. The whole moment was odd and we get to see Nigma's quirks out weird Cobblepot's. I have a feeling this will be a fun relationship to follow in the future.
