Solo: A Star Wars Story's Alden Ehrenreich Lays Down the Law: Han Shot First
There have been a lot of debates within the Star Wars fandom but one of the loudest is the idea of who shot first in A New Hope. Was it Han like it was in the original theatrical version? Was Greedo like in the special editions? Did they both fire at the same time and Greedo can't hit a man sitting a foot away from him and is thus an idiot? Entertainment Weekly decided that it was time to ask the next man to play Han Solo Alden Ehrenreich and he had a very definitive answer.
"Han," replies Ehrenreich without missing a beat. "I think it's just fun. It's part of the swagger cowboy of the whole character and everything. I think one thing that is true about him and that you get to enjoy in this movie is that it's kind of the dark underworld gangster underbelly of the Star Wars universe, and you gotta be quick and cunning if you're going to make it there."
Han shooting first doesn't diminish his character in any way or make him unlikable. There were thousands of people from the Empire on the Death Star when it blew up and no one said Luke Skywalker was a terrible person for doing that. Why is Han shooting a man in cold blood any different from that?
His co-stars Paul Bettany, Emilia Clarke, and Donald Glover are on Ehrenreich's side.
"100 percent," says Bettany.
"Yeah, yeah," says Glover.
"We're behind you," says Clarke.
So Han shot first, and there isn't anything wrong with that because everyone in Star Wars is some level of complete psycho when it comes to taking the lives of perceived enemies.
Summary: During an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.
Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Thandie Newton. It will be released May 25th.
