[SPOILERS] James Mangold Confirms He Spoiled 'Logan's' Ending Four Years Ago

The era of social media has changed the way we look at spoilers in our various television shows. We could watch Games of Thrones and less than a minute later reveal who dies to our entire social media circle. It means that people have gotten much more diligent when it comes to avoiding people and websites that they know could spoil them. Some people even go as far as to go completely offline for several days or even weeks before a movie or season finale happens. Sometimes, it's hard to avoid these spoilers because someone around you might not care to keep their mouth shut or they just don't care. Other times a writer might hint at a spoiler years before it actually happens but this is more likely to happen in television than movies. This appears to have happened, at least thematically, with Logan and director James Mangold.

To discuss this though we need to spoil the end of Logan so if you have not seen the movie yet then come back and take a look at this another time.

In 2013 James Magold directed The Wolverine which saw Logan head to Japan and meet up with mutant Yukio who can see the future. She tells Logan that she has a vision and tells him "I see you on your back, there's blood everywhere. You're holding your own heart in your hand." That scene ended up playing out in the movie proper as Logan had to cut a parasite off of his own hear to fix his healing but a twitter user noticed that there is a thematic parallel to Yukio's prophecy and Logan's fate at the end of his last movie.

These sort of parallells are usually found in various fandom communities that are reading way too much into small details that no one besides fans would have noticed. In fact I personally saw a gif set of this on tumblr and thought that it was just an awesome twist of words and didn't think much of it. However, Mangold surprised everyone by revealing that the parallel was intentional.

He went on to retweet the theory to his own timeline.

Now, when we saw that Mangold "spoiled" Logan four years ago that is not literal. He directed The Wolverine and likely thought the parallel was a nice little twist to link the previous movies.

This also further complicates the already convoluted X-Men timeline since The Wolverine was in the same timeline as X-Men: The Last Stand which was blinked out of existence in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Logan also says that it takes place in 2029, six years after the Future scene from Days of Future Past but also says that no new mutants have been born in twenty-five years. The school, in 2023, was packed with kids which doesn't make any sense.

So while the wink and nod is likely nothing more than that it does add another layer of complication to an already impossible to follow timeline. Let's just say any further continuity errors can be explained with "because X-Men" and call it good.
