[SPOILERS] Taika Waititi Talks The Hulk As A Child, A Star Wars Connection, And In-Camera Work In Thor: Ragnarok

There weren't a lot of spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok released before the movie but now that the movie is out it's time to chat about them. Director Taika Waititi spoke to Empire about a bunch of spoilers in the movie and, as usual, it's best to see Thor: Ragnarok before reading this.

For Waititi sometimes it's hard to relate to larger than life characters like Thor or the Hulk. That meant, when writing the script, he had to work to put fantastical characters in relatable situations.

"When you look at comic book characters, we don't have anything in common with them," Waititi says, "especially not Rich Kid Space Viking or Bipolar Angry Green Beast. So you've got to bring them into situations that all of us have been in."

When it comes to the Hulk and Thor having a conversation about feelings Waititi remembered having similar conversations with his kids.

"As a parent, I've had those conversations with my kids. 'Honey, you just can't do that, you can't hit your sister.' And she goes, 'I'm sorry, I just get so angry." It's the exact conversation that Thor and Hulk are having."

One of the funniest moments in the movie was the callback to Loki getting the crap kicked out of him by The Hulk in The Avengers. It turns out a variation of that happened again but it didn't end up in the finished product.

"They all land on the bridge – Thor, Loki and then Hulk. They stand for a second. Then Hulk just smashes Loki, punches him out of the frame – just like in Avengers, when Hulk did it to Thor. It was a crowd favourite, but we just had to get rid of it for time. It might be on the DVD."

One of the big reveals is that Hela is Thor's older sister. It's a reveal that comes fairly early in the movie but, according to Waititi, it was later. However, that was changed and largely because of Star Wars.

"We thought, 'We can't ever compete with Luke and Darth, which is the greatest reveal ever. Why bother? Let's get it out of the way early, because it's actually not the most important thing. What's more important is the fact that Asgard was built on lies."

The other aspect of Hela being Thor's sister was finding out that Mjolnir was originally hers.

"I love Thor thinking he was the favourite son all this time," says Waititi. "I loved showing that Hela was the favourite, that Odin had such high hopes for Hela and had possibly made that hammer for her – that it was just a hand-me-down for Thor."

Finally, Waititi talks about the scene where Doctor Strange teleports Thor all around the Sanctum Sanctorum and that effect was all in-camera.

"It was all in-camera," Waititi confirms. "Just jump cuts – hard-cutting to Chris doing a little wobble, as if he'd just arrived. For me, it was great – we didn't need to do some sparkly VFX illusion. That stuff is very satisfying as a filmmaker."

Summary: Imprisoned, the mighty Thor finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization.
