Will Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Feature Luke Skywalker and Be Set in Modern-Day New York? [SPOILERS]
This clickbait article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, you had better click away now. It's not worth it.
In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker's story comes to an end when Luke, after straining himself too hard to Force project his image across the Galaxy in order to stall Kylo Ren, stares off into a horizon with two suns. Elvis went out kind of the same way on the toilet. But for actor Mark Hamill, it was difficult to let go of his role in the movie. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hamill and director Rian Johnson discussed the scene.
"The first thing I said was, 'Can't you wait and do this in Episode IX?'" Hamill revealed.
Unfortunately, it was time for Luke's story to end.
"I think the hero's journey of Luke Skywalker concluded in Return of the Jedi," Johnson explained. "This is the hero's journey of Rey, and Finn, and Poe. The story of Luke is one that has to play in tandem with that of Rey."
Even so, Johnson still had reservations.
"I had huge hesitance," Johnson said of killing off Luke Skywalker. "I was terrified. It was a growing sense of dread when I realized this was going to make sense in that chapter."
"Well, I'm still in denial," Hamill said of his character's death. "I just think he transported somewhere else."
Johnson had an idea of where Luke could have transported to: "Modern day New York. That was my favorite theory we had."
Is this a clue to the plans for Johnson's upcoming Star Wars trilogy of movies? Sadly, probably not. For one thing, we know that Johnson's story is not intended to have anything to do with the Skywalker saga, so having Luke star in the trilogy would likely be problematic. Additionally, Johnson, and Hamill were almost certainly joking.
Even still, now that we've heard it, we can't get the idea of a movie featuring Luke Skywalker in modern day New York City out of our heads. Maybe Skywalker can cross over the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
If you subscribe to a favorite theory of ours, it wouldn't be the first time the two franchises crossed over. Samuel L. Jackson is another Star Wars actor who has never really come to terms with his character's death in Revenge of the Sith.
"In my mind, I'm not dead" Jackson said back in 2016. "Jedi can fall incredibly high distances and not die." Jackson went so far as to petition Star Wars creator George Lucas, albeit after Lucas was no longer in charge of the franchise, and Lucas told him, "alright, you can be alive."
So what happened to Mace Windu? It's our belief that after falling out the window, Windu survives and travels far, far away to another galaxy, where, as we know Jedi are capable of, he lives for a long time. Along the way, he gains a convincing mechanical hand and loses an eye in a freak lightsaber accident, only to emerge in modern times as Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Could the same thing happen with Luke Skywalker? Somebody at Marvel had better be making phone calls right now.
