Toys Hint At Black Suit Superman In Justice League Film
It looks very possible that we will be getting the black-suited Superman in the upcoming Justice League film by Warner Bros. Over a year ago, Superman-actor Henry Cavill teased at the black suit on Twitter. Well, if the toys are anything to go by, then we will most certainly be getting the black suit.
First covered by ScreenRant, the second series of the Justice League figures shows a black-suited Superman. Now, it's worth mentioning that it looks like other characters like Aquaman and Batman will also be receiving alternate costumes in the second series. Whether or not those will actually appear in the movie is up in the air, and some just look like the toys taking liberties in the costume redesign.
The black suit and its accompanying mullet first appeared in the Reign of the Supermen story arc by Dan Jurgens, Louise Simonson, Roger Stern, Tom Grummett, Jackson Guice, and Jon Bogdanove from 1993. It was the costume that he donned upon his return from death. It was supposed to help him heal by more easily absorbing the sun's radiation. He wore it briefly, but it has made some returns since. Most notably, it came back recently in Superman: Lois and Clark by Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks from 2015.
It's not an awful-looking costume by any stretch of the imagination. It still baffles me that the first films with the Justice League or any DC heroes sharing the screen is mining material from the much-reviled Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen stories. What it isn't mining from that, it's taking from Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's Justice League comic from the beginning of the New 52. That comic has a more positive reception, even if the New 52 as a whole doesn't. Steppenwolf gives it a touch of Earth 2 by James Robinson and Nicola Scott, but that's probably the only plot beat from that comic it will use.
The black suit aesthetic would also explain whatever is going on with Henry Cavill's hair in that last Justice League trailer. I wasn't expecting Superman: Trailer Trash Edition from a big-budget Hollywood release.
Justice League, by Zack Snyder, will be out November 17th of this year. It will be starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gidot, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Jeremy Irons, J.K Simmons, Amy Adams, Ciaran Hinds, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, and many, many others.
